In 2008 I went to Road 2 California and took a bunch of classes. One was African Embroidery. Leora taught me many new stitches and thread combos. I’m happy to finally have the long ago embroidered piece out of my UFO box.
Quilt Maker: Terri Budesa
Quilt Name: (no name given)
Quilt Information: Pattern Fire Island Hosta by Judy Niemeyer.
Quilted by Janet Wilson.
This was my first time working with prints in a Judy quilt. I really struggled with orange at first. I thought it was going to be too strong. A wise friend told me to keep going & trust my vision. I did, and thankfully the rest of the colors helped calm the orange.

Quilt Maker: Ellen Eastman
Quilt Name: Fruit of the Vine

Quilt Maker: Elaine Shanafelt
Quilt Name: Hawaiian Fantasy (51” x 51”)
Quilt Information: Started in March 2008 in MSQG applique class with Didi McElroy, I just finished this 2 weeks ago! It accompanied me on many summer vacations, so seemed appropriate for this month’s show. The name comes from the “fantasy” I had in believing that I could applique one of the most difficult patterns Didi had and hand-echo-quilt the appliqued portion in any reasonable amount of time. I will now enjoy it as I continue to work my way through the stack of UFOs waiting their turn to be completed.
Quilt Maker: Elaine Shanafelt
Quilt Name: “Some Day I’ll Be a Butterfly” (50″x41″) and “Today I Am a Butterfly” (49″x41″)
Quilt Information: Started in 2004 MSQG class with Marilyn Doheny using her wedge ruler, I made 2 kinds of wedges and sewed them together. As I played with them, the idea of a caterpillar & butterfly developed, which I thought would make cute baby quilts. In 2007, when my niece announced that she was having twins, I thought these would be perfect for her baby boy and girl – similar but different.
Quilt Maker: Elaine Shanafelt
Quilt Name: “Len’s Pond Friends” (left) & “Claire’s Pond Friends” (right)
Quilt Information: 2007 was the year of twins in our family! These were made for my nephew’s & his wife’s twins from patterns in a children’s quilt book, which I borrowed from a friend. Each quilt was to have the same creature in all squares, but I liked mixing them up a bit for the twins – again, similar but different.
Quilt Maker: Peggy Payne
Quilt Name: French Summer
Quilt Information: The blues and yellows in this quilt are classic French country kitchen colors but as soon as the quilt was complete I realized it would be the perfect table topper for eating lunch in my garden. This is another pattern that my sister Kathy and I designed and made for Fiber Legends.
