History

The Mountain Stars Quilting Guild was founded in 1983 with 22 charter members from all over southern Oregon. A list of all the founding members can be found here: MSQG_Charter_Members

An initial organizing meeting was held on May 14, 1983 where officers were elected. Those initial officers were:  President: Dora Scheidecker, Vice-President: Margaret Hunsaker, Secretary: Dorothy Herberg, and Treasurer: Pat Hatfield.  A list of all past officers can be found here: MSQG_Past_Officers

Initially the officers each served a 2-year term with the President and Treasurer positions being elected in even numbered years and the Vice-President and Secretary positions being elected in odd numbered years. In June of 1997 the position of President Elect was adopted and Joann Stuebing was the first to serve in that capacity beginning in the following year. And in 2018, the position of Parliamentarian/ Bylaws was added to be filled by the person who served as President the prior year. Sue Cunningham was the first to serve as Parliamentarian/Bylaws.

The first regular meeting of the guild was held on June 11, 1983. In those early days of the guild, meetings were held only quarterly.  It wasn’t until later that the guild began meeting every other month in odd-numbered months (January, March, May, July, September and November). And in late 2018, the guild began doing Open Sew Days (also known as Saturday Sew) on the second Saturday in even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).

PLEASE NOTE:  The Jackson County Genealogy Library is temporarily closed. Please check their calendar for the virtual events they have scheduled.

Once upon a time . . . the very talented quilters from the Jacksonville Museum Quilters Guild set out to make unique quilts, each with a story to tell about the inhabitants and early history of the Rogue Valley. Many years later the collection found itself without a home. Ultimately, the historical quilt collection was donated to the Jackson County Genealogy Library (JCGL) where the quilts are displayed in the reading room at the Library.

One of the objectives of the JCGL Quilt Committee is to focus on the relationship of quilts to family history and genealogy. Toward that end, we will continue the series of “Quilts and Genealogy”. These talks are given on the fourth Tuesday each month (except for December) at 1:30 pm at JCGL. Jackson County Genealogy Library can be found at 3405 S Pacific Hwy, Medford, OR
