‘Winter Holidays’
Quilt Maker: Janice Dechant
Quilt Name: Work of Heart Sampler
Quilt Information: I began constructing this quilt after I moved back to Washington. While there I joined a sewing group that had already voted on the design that everyone would be making using their preferred method and fabric color wave. Hand appliqué has never been a favorite process of mine but I was game to give it a try and chose to use bright batik fabric. I managed to complete 9 of the blocks before returning to Medford. The final three blocks were eventually finished 6-9 months later. Linda Frisbee completed the quilting for me and did an absolutely stunning job. Believe me, after all the time and frustration invested there was no way I was going to take the chance of making a mess of things by doing the quilting myself. Regrettably, I was only able to see one of the other ladies’ completed quilts before a left. She proved to be an over achiever who got hers “done” in 9 months. Maybe if I make another trip home I’ll have a chance to see others – if this social isolation situation ever ends.

Quilt Maker: Joela Oetterer

Quilt Information: Saw this pattern by Keri Duke at the Portland Quilt Show many years ago and knew I had to do this. I had seen Charley’s work at a museum in San Francisco and had fallen in love with his birds a few years earlier. The pattern for the quilt was Paper Lanterns/Cozy Quilt Designs. The quilt measures 75” x 86” and was made at the end of last year (2019). Sue said “I loved the pattern and wanted it as a throw for my bed.”
Quilt Maker: Unknown (submitted by Ellen Eastman)
Quilt Name: Newark Wreath
Quilt Information: I inherited this quilt (a Stout Family heirloom) from my mother-in-law. She told me it was made in Utah by her mother and sisters in the early 20th century. A quilt appraiser/historian told me that it was much older and not a pattern that was used in Utah. After some research I determined that it was made in Missouri and came to Utah when the Mormons left Missouri.

Quilt Maker: Terri Budesa
Quilt Name: Christmas Cactus for Dad
Quilt Information: I had just begun quilting this (from a pattern by Judy Niemeyer called Arizona Cactus) when I got word that my dad was very ill and in the hospital. We drove down to the Bay Area to be with him, and he passed away 2 days later on Dec. 15th. We stayed for a while to assist with final arrangements. We were home in time for Christmas but nobody really felt like celebrating. I had to put the quilt aside for a while. Finally in February I could look at it again without crying, and finished the quilting.
