“Red, White & Blue!” and “Vacation Time!”
Quilt Maker: Elaine Shanafelt
Quilt Name: Happy Birthday, Nana (60 1/2” x 60 1/2”)
Quilt Information: Completed April 2021, this is the last of 5 “hankie quilts” made for my aunt’s granddaughters. The oldest granddaughter chose the red, white & blue hankies and fabrics to remember her grandmother, who was born on Memorial Day.

Quilt Name: Quilt of Valor (63” x 63”)
Quilt Information: Made for a close high school friend who served in U.S. Air Force in Viet Nam, 1969-70. At a high school reunion, he shared some of his experiences, which stayed with me over the years. When the QOV project started, I wanted to be sure that he received a quilt. Using fabrics collected over many years, I started making blocks in 2019 and completed the quilt in time for Veteran’s Day 2020.

Quilt Name: 50 Years and Still Movin’ (63” x 63”)
Quilt Information: Made for my sister-in-law’s and her husband’s 50th Anniversary July 2004, I made blocks representing the 5 states they had lived in (PA, IA, GA, AL, MS). Block patterns are from “State Capitals Quilt Blocks” by Barbara Bannister & Edna Ford and “U.S. State Quilt Blocks” from Workbasket Magazine. Since we celebrated over July 4th weekend, the patriotic theme seemed appropriate.

Quilt Name: Beacons in the Storm
Quilt Information: Inspired by Storm at Sea quilts made by friends at a Mountain Stars retreat, I decided that was the perfect pattern, particularly incorporating the batik lighthouse squares I had won at a MSQG meeting, for a grad school friend who was retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard. I started the quilt at the May 2005 MSQG retreat and finished it just in time for her retirement ceremony in July 2005 at Port of Wilmington, NC, where she had been Commanding Officer. Over the years I had visited my friend at almost all of her assignments and we have remained close for over 50 years.

Quilt Name: A Season in Time
Quilt Information: I love the mountains and fishing high elevation lakes. Each panel has a story that I tell my grandkids. They try to guess who is going to get the (real) fishing fly, the frog or the fish. From a Makenna Ryan pattern.
Quilt Maker: Katie Gomez
Quilt Name: Bliss
Quilt Information: 18” square pillow. Hono designed by Sylvia Pippen. When on Vacation one of my favorite things to do is swim with the big beautiful turtles in Maui. This is my vacation bliss moment.
Quilt Maker: Stacey Wallace
Quilt Name: Fireworks (design by Monique Dillard ~ 36” x 36”)
Quilt Information: I made this for over our fireplace. I like that it is hanging from my summer swimsuit drying clothesline in the picture!

Quilt Name: Long May She Wave
Quilt Information: I won these Block Party blocks several years ago. I finished the quilt in 2011. All the blocks are signed by Mountain Stars members; some are still with us, some have passed on, and some have moved away. The setting of the Overall Sam blocks remind me of the Keystone Cops.
Quilt Maker: Ellen Eastman
Quilt Name: Red, White and Blue Feathered Star
Quilt Information: I love the Feathered Star block. My goal is to make one of these for each season. (Two down, one UFO, and one to start.)
Quilt Maker: Susan Tresner
Quilt Name: Majesty of Oregon
Quilt Information: Made for the Umpqua Valley Quilter’s Guild 2017 Quilt Show Challenge.
O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain. For purple mountain majesties, above the fruited plain. America, America, God shed His grace on thee. And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.
Quilt Maker: Peggy Payne
Quilt Name: Norwegian Summer
Quilt Information: For some reason this quilt made me think of the Norwegian flag, hence the name and fabric choices. I’ve always wanted to take an extended vacation to visit Norway and the other Scandinavian countries but I suspect that this quilt is as close as I’ll ever get!
