Front Porch Quilt Show – June 2021

“Dads Are Special People” and “Summertime!”

Quilt Maker:  Elaine Shanafelt
Quilt Name:  Caribbean Memories: Underwater (28″ x 40″)
Quilt Information:  I started this quilt in 2006 as part of a challenge, but broke my arm and couldn’t finish it in time.  I put it aside and finally completed it in 2013. The challenge: Exchange small pieces of batik fabrics with all participants (about 10 of us); use each fabric completely and visibly; use 3 non-cotton materials; must include layering; may be any size & use any number of additional fabrics.

Quilt Name:  ‘Crowded Beach’ or ‘Rainy Night at Britt’ (48″ x 48)
Quilt Information:  One of my first quilts (made in 1997), I used 4″ squares of fabric samples to “play” with color and design.  When I finished, it reminded me of umbrellas on a crowded beach.  Soon after, we attended a Britt concert in the rain.  The sea of umbrellas in front of us was quite similar to a crowded beach.  I gave it to a grand-niece for a beach blanket.

Quilt Name:  Let’s Go Fishin’ (42″ x 51″)
Quilt Information:  From a friend’s book of children’s quilts, I made this in 2003 for a grand-nephew, the first grandchild of my husband’s sister & brother-in-law, whose favorite summer past time is fishing.

Quilt Maker:  Bonnie Scriba
Quilt Name:  Quilt of Valor
Quilt Information:  I made this QOV quilt for my Dad, and was to present it to him in April 2020. Covid arrived and cancelled my plans. So in July, family friends went to him for an outside picnic at his home. They presented the quilt and read my message to him. He is now 94 years old, still lives alone with his little dog Rosie. In each of the corners are pictures of him in uniform, one with my Mom and his enlistment document.

Quilt Maker:  Linda Greenstone/Lee Greenstone
Quilt Name:  The Lighthouse Quilt
Quilt Information:  I sewed this for my husband after doing the Oregon Coast 101 Shop Hop in 2013. I say sewed, because: he picked out and bought every fabric (which are all ocean scenes), he decided on the pattern, he decided how every piece of fabric should be cut, how it was quilted, and what thread was used.  He also wanted the lighthouses to be somewhat trapuntoed.
The pattern was ‘All American Rose’ by Maria Umhey.
Chris Soper did the quilting. Each lighthouse block and boarder was custom quilted; while the rails were quilted with an overall sailboat and wave pattern.

Quilt Maker:  Katie Gomez
Quilt Name:  Summertime
Quilt Information:  Summer is wearing flip flops almost non-stop and having fun. I knew immediately what I needed to include in the Mountain Stars Quilt Guild Front Porch June theme. I took my flops off and traced them and the rest happened.

Quilt Maker:  Ellen Eastman
Quilt Name:  Arrow Crown on Steroids
Quilt Information:  This was from a Cornell mystery class. She enlarged a traditional quilt block to create a large quilt. I made this for my husband with fabric I found at The Stitchin’ Post in Sisters.

Quilt Maker:  Ellen Eastman
Quilt Name:  Dinnertime
Quilt Information:  I adapted a pattern I found in McCall’s Quilting magazine, August 2000, as a gift for my husband.

Quilt Maker:  Ellen Eastman
Quilt Name:  Blue Dragonfly
Quilt Information:  Since I see a lot of dragonflies in my garden during the summer I had to make this quilt. In addition to blue dragonflies I also see red ones and silver/black ones.

Quilt Maker:  Susan Tresner
Quilt Name:  Every Dad Has His Day
Quilt Information:  No animals were harmed in the making of this quilt but I did raid my husband’s closet. Happy Father’s Day!

Quilt Maker:  Kathy Miners
Quilt Name:  Semper Fidelis
Quilt Information:  I made this quilt for my husband Dave’s 55th birthday because he was a former Marine. But when his younger brother Mike (who spent 20 years in the Marine Corp), saw it he got tears in his eyes. So Dave said he wanted to give it to Mike and I agreed. It was important to both of us that it went to the right home. Mike says he still gets tears in his eyes when he looks at it and it’s the best present he’s ever received.

Quilt Maker:  Terry Sheldon
Quilt Name:  Snowdrops
Quilt Information:  This quilt was designed by Deb Tucker. I have been getting into her methods, genius tools, YouTube videos, and visit her site often. She has taught me so much!

Quilt Maker:  Peggy Payne
Quilt Name:  Monsters!
Quilt Information:  This is one of my favorite quilts because it reminds me of my father and never fails to bring a smile to my face. In his later years he was a frequent visitor to the ER at TRMC but, because he had difficulty walking, he needed to be in a wheelchair and would get really cold sitting in the lobby area. So I decided I needed to make him a lap quilt to use and chose these fabrics with little cartoon “monster” faces because they were so bright and cheerful. He loved the quilt and loved using it because people at the ER would come up to him to see the quilt and would talk to him. He was a true extrovert and loved having a chance to talk to everyone – staff, patients and visitors – it always made him happy and helped relieve the stress of being at the ER.
